Feedback from Music Video Director - Lucy Needs
I recently received feedback from the music video director that I contacted a while ago, unfortunately she gave us feedback after the deadline of our coursework which is a shame. However the comments are truly much appreciated and we as a whole are thankful for her support and guidance throughout this project.

Audience Feedback Survey
Friday, 12 December 2014
Evaluation - Question Four (DRAFT)
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Pre-Production:
- Blogger - This was for when we were going through Research and Planning, it allowed us all to be posting our ideas and also to plan each week as we went through to keep ourselves organised and make sure that we had our final product in mind all throughout.
- Email (Gmail and Hotmail) - This was used to communicate throughout our group and also to contact both the Music Video Director for advice and also the owner of the studio that we wanted to rent out when starting to film our video.
- Internet/Google Chrome (Google Chrome easier to use with Google applications, such as Blogger) - This was to help us find the research that we needed to help develop our ideas, it also allowed us to find out information and inspiration when it came to starting the development of our digipaks and adverts.
- YouTube - We used YouTube at this stage of pre-production for when we needed to find inspiration both for the style of our music video and also for the dance that was going to be the biggest factor in it.
- Animoto - This was to pitch our idea to the class, hearing the feedback from this was very beneficial to us and we were able to get across our ideas better than if we had just explained them verbally.
- Scribd - I used the web app Scribd a number of times throughout the work, mainly to display my analysis of digipaks. This was a very useful programme to use and was very beneficial to the work because it allowed me to display all of the research in the style that I wanted to get across. It made the work look slicker, therefore projecting the style of the video that we wanted to create.
- Computer systems - HP Computer (Windows) and Apple Mac - These were just the computer systems that made the whole work much easier to do. This work is all computer based, therefore meaning that without this form of technology then there would be no development at all.
- Google Images - Google Images was used to find out what type of style we wanted to create. It also allowed us to find images of the band we were inspired by, Arcade Fire, and generate a better direction of where we wanted to take our work.
- Twitter - We used Twitter very briefly, to help get across the realism of the band we created and make sure we were getting across a certain public image of our band.
- iPhone - We used iPhone technology, I primarily used it with the blogger app available on iTunes to help me update posts I'd done on the go. Also we used it to listen to the song we had decided on when filming.
Production:
- Photoshop - This form of technology was primarily used throughout the process of creating the Digipak and Advert to give a more professional finish to the products, having already used this program throughout the Music Magazine coursework last year it meant that the basic understanding was there and I was able to produce my products a lot quicker because I already knew how to operate the system.
- Nikon DSLR Camera - We used this camera throughout the filming for our final music video, whereas for the draft we just used the small handheld camera, this was a better piece of equipment to use because it was of a higher quality and allowed myself (as the 'camera woman') to get a better shot because the focus and 'blur' effect from the camera gave the effect that we were looking for all along.
- Small Handheld video camera - This camera was also very crucial to our filming, this is what we used throughout the filming of the draft and was also very beneficial throughout the final filming because used this when filming integral shots when the DSLR was running out of battery.
- iTunes, iPhones and iPads - These three things were crucial to the filming because we could listen to the song we had chosen and also play dance videos when inspiration was needed when shooting the music video.
- Three Professional Filming Lights - These lights were provided to us by the studio that we hired out, they were incredibly beneficial to us because they gave the shadows that we wanted all throughout shooting and organising the video. Without these lights, and also the practice of 'three point lighting' then we would have a completely different video now.
Post-Production:
- YouTube - We used this technology to upload our two music videos, this was to make the video easily accessible for the public and peers to view. This was then very crucial to our work because we needed to be able to get the video public somehow, and this is the best platform to do that.
- Blogger - This was to publish our videos after we had edited them and put them onto YouTube, this was mainly so our peers and teachers could see our work after we had produced it. Again, this was essential to our work and was something that was within use throughout the whole of this coursework to show how far we have all come throughout this process and how the initial idea had changed from the beginning.
- Final Cut Pro - This is what we used to edit our video on, after working through this coursework both myself and my group members have gained a lot of skills that we didn't have before we started this project.
- Apple Mac - This is what was used throughout the editing process.
Evaluation - Question Three (DRAFT)
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout the whole process of this coursework, we collectively as a group have received a number of examples of audience feedback. This has been very beneficial to us as a group, and because we have only just released our video we are still waiting on feedback from that. However we shall go into more depth with that feedback and possibly conduct a survey within our target audience in order to gain a level of understanding within our audience as to how this video would go down within the music community. This would be more essential to my understanding because without seeing what the audience thinks to the final video then I wouldn't get a clear idea of whether what we did was good or bad. Also I have emailed the Music Video Director, Lucy Needs, again to ask for her opinion on the video because I felt it was appropriate to gain feedback from an industry expert. However before all of the feedback is collected, this is the feedback we have received so far.
Evaluation - Question Two (DRAFT)
How Effective is the Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?
- When designing my Digipak and Advert, I had a very clear idea in mind that I intended to create which was the design that I finished with. I wanted to keep both the ancillary texts as minimal looking as possible because for the genre and style I was trying to replicate it meant that this was the road I particularly wanted to go down. The lack of imagery and minimal wording across both the texts was something that was done purposely to give a sense of 'mysteriousness' to the band we had created, also because our video is fairly quirky and perplexing then I wanted that to be represented in the digipak and advert. This is mainly because the band that we took the most inspiration from, Arcade Fire, are very different to most artists on the market and they also have a mystifying nature about them and they tend not to give a lot of themselves away in both their music videos and also their digipaks and magazine adverts. This was where the initial idea lay, however throughout development I found that The XX's album cover (as well as many others) was something that I knew that I wanted to replicate. With the clear style of our style from the get go, and my original idea of filming in a white room, we knew that we were going down the direction of the products being very minimalistic and effortless. Also, because of this minimalism theme it can be easily seen throughout my ancillary texts and also the music video; this is because the music video only has two people and a limited mise-en-scene, which can then be seen throughout my digipak and advert.
- I had an idea in my mind throughout the whole start of this process in what I wanted my ancillary texts to look like and continued with that original prospect in mind whilst continuing with the research and planning. However, whilst in the developing process on Photoshop I did see how others ideas might turn out, although I stuck with the motif of the circles on the album cover and the magazine advert. The font used throughout my digipak also is something that was replicated in the music video, with the writing on the opening shots announcing the band name and song title. Even though these fonts are clearly not the same, they have the same style and structure making them more relevant to each other. In saying that, both products have a clear style and link together both through colour and style.
- I wanted both the music video and the ancillary texts to have a polished and cultivated effect to them, this was achieved through the use of measures of accuracy. Whether that be the grid effect on Photoshop to make sure that everything is lined up to be exactly as it should be, and also the use of Final Cut Pro to crop and alter the clips we filmed in order to achieve the look of sophistication and professionalism. All of these things needed to be very specific in order to achieve the look of the genre we were emulating, therefore meaning that both the ancillary texts and the music video were linked through this method.
- One thing that I also tried to achieve was the lack of photography throughout the ancillary texts. This was purposely done because of the fact that most products within the Indie/Alternative genre do not normally tend to include images of the band on their products. In Arcade Fire's case, this is very true for them; they are one of the band's that have a distinct style running throughout their albums and each one of them is completely different than the previous. They use an artistic element throughout all of their albums and tend to have illustrations and images on their products, something that I definitely tried to replicate. This genre, however, is known for focusing on the artistry of the band rather than their appearance. Something that is clearly shown throughout our video as well, because of the fact that even though there is some star appeal with the use of our lead singer (Cam) it is still quirky enough and the narrative is so intense that the appearance doesn't come into any context. This therefore shows a distinct link between both the ancillary texts and the music video.
- Interest for the band was also shown throughout both products, because we all wanted to keep the band very mysterious it meant a level of distance was needed throughout both products to enable the audience to gain more curiosity behind what they stood for. The lack of imagery on my ancillary texts was to prove this point, as this is a common occurrence within most other products in the Indie/Alternative genre. However throughout the music video as well there is a level of obscurity as to who this band are and where they are, even though in our video we have only included the lead singer to add that star quality to our product.
Evaluation - Question One (DRAFT)
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Music Video:
The type of music video we wanted to make was essentially one with a narrative, this was the original idea all along because we never wanted to have instruments anywhere involved with the mise en scene. Therefore, this is crucial to the way our video was perceived all throughout the research and planning; the real media products that we used for inspiration we either used, developed or challenged the conventional forms of what was perceived to be 'normal' within the music industry.
Through the evidence of the following pictures below, it is plain to see how our product has referenced and used, developed and challenged real media products. Slow Club's videos 'Two Cousins' and 'Complete Surrender', both directed by Lucy Needs (the director I contacted), have a lot of the elements that we used in our product. For example, pictures 1 and 2 show the same shot used from the 'Two Cousins' video and then how we replicated that into our video. It is important to use real media products as inspiration for your own purely because of the fact that they show exactly what the industry is doing, and also because we wanted our video to be as 'quirky' as possible it meant that taken inspiration from videos such as these were the most helpful because they referenced the type of audience that we wanted to target. The use of the hand shot was crucial to our video because of the fact that it is able to show emotion in the extremities and is able to get across to the audience exactly how this person is feeling. With this it is clear that we used this element in our work, however the video in general is something that we developed because there is no narrative within the 'Two Cousins' video; however within our's we made sure that because of the emotion in the song and what the lyrics mean that we respected that and made sure that there was something within our video that showed this development.
Also with picture 3 and 4, also from the 'Two Cousins' video, the range of dance is something that we replicated within our video. Also the black and white theme is used throughout our video with good effect, this is something that helps the look and emotion of the video because then you don't have colour distracting you from what the video is trying to get across. You only have the the people and lack of mise en scene to get across the story of what this couple is going through and how he does not love her anymore. The range of dancing in our video was something that was always going to be built up within our video to have more impact towards the crescendo of the song, something that the 'Two Cousins' video does as well and therefore clear that we took and used within our own. Again, we developed this video a lot because the original Slow Club one does not have a story line whereas our's does therefore showing a level of quirkiness to what this genre normally produced.
What we did to challenge our video was through the use of the mise en scene, the costumes mainly. Even though we had a set idea coming from our draft of what costumes to do, especially considering that after the draft I was put in charge of sorting the costumes because that is something that I want to do in my later career, so this seemed like the best idea for me to be put in control of. However, there were issues with this because of the fact that I had purchased a vintage dress that unfortunately did not fit Sophie and became an issue for us when filming. Therefore we had to take the next best alternative which was to wear one of Cam's larger t-shirts, which even though I was not sure of at the time turned out okay in the end. In saying that though, because of this we have challenged Ed Sheeran's video 'Thinking Out Loud' because the costumes in his video are more extravagant it is challenging our video because we have used costumes that give know real clue as to who these characters are and what kind of personalities they have. Even though this is not typically the most respectable thing to have done in our video because these characters are fully developed in their emotions, it is only their costumes that are not telling the audience who they are and what they stand for. However, I would say that this works in our video. Even though it challenges the normal conventions of what videos do, there is still a lot of the character's personalities and experiences shown and even though their costumes are minimal and plain it still works.
We also took major inspiration from Sia's 'Chandelier' video, this was for both the dancing and the look that was portrayed throughout our own video. We wanted contemporary dancing, and this video included the most contemporary dancing in recent times. Therefore it is clear to see that we used this element within our video, not to the same extent as Sia's video. However in saying that, even though our video has used her's as inspiration, other than the dancing there is not much more that can be referenced within our own. The Sia one doesn't have a clear storyline, which our's does, and the setting is also something that is not portrayed in the Parables' video. We have then developed these points further and brought them into the world of the Indie/Alternative genre, rather than the Pop/Dance genre. Although, we have also taken similar costume tips from the Sia video, the lack of personality shown through it is something that we unintentionally achieved within our's and surprisingly it is something that has been executed well.
Going onto pictures 9, 10, 11 and 12; these pictures show the clear similarities between Slow Club's 'Complete Surrender' video and also our's. The use of the mid shots and the close ups within this video is an element that we really wanted to portray, therefore using this element from real media products.
We have managed to use, develop and challenge many aspects of the music video industry within the production of our video. Using videos such as these as inspiration is what has inspired us all along to be producing a video that looks completely different to anything that has been seen before; and even though I can totally vouch for the fact that we have not been 'original' in any shape or form, I would then say that we have taken all of the appropriate elements out of our inspirational videos and formed something that can be seen equally as 'quirky' and with certain twists and turns that the audience wouldn't necessarily expect.

Digipak and Advert:
When researching the internet for the type of digipak and advert I wanted to create, I seemed to find a lot of inspiration in the form of The XX, Arctic Monkeys and Justice in terms of minimalism on their album covers. However whilst continuing this research, I realised that there was nothing in particular that I wanted to replicate. I didn't want to take anything from anybody else, however I would not say that I have been 'original' at all. The use of the shapes and the conceptual features behind what I have created was something very reminiscent of the Indie/Alternative genre, as most Indie bands do not follow the conventions of using band photography on their album covers and adverts. This then is obviously an element that I wanted to replicate with my own style and flair to create an album cover that could resonate with the Indie/Alternative target audience. I have used many elements from real media products, such as The XX's covers. They have inspired me the most purely for the fact that their simplicity and minimalism comes across very effortlessly and that is something that I want to come across withing my design. Whether I achieved that or not is something that I still must gain from audience feedback, and then I will be able to conduct a full test as to whether my design has been received well by my target audience.

Digipak Journey
- The first two images show The XX's first two album covers, these have inspired me greatly within this journey because they show a very minimalistic style and it is something that I wanted to showcase within my design. The effortlessness that this style shows us is something that is very eye catching as well as being something that not a lot of bands would do. It tells us the name of the band as well as making a statement, which is something I tried to replicate.
- The next image is of Justice's album, Cross, this design such as the last one is something that I tried to emulate. This is because the simple design and lack of colours was something I wanted to replicate as it really can become a classic. When researching different minimalistic album covers I found websites that showed the top 10 minimalistic designs, this being one of them. This inspired me even more then because I wanted to make something that would have the same prestige.
- The next two images show moon designs, and an actual picture of the moon. The first image shows a 'full moon in the gemini' and what I liked about this was the colours and the way that this artwork was set out. It looked very original and gave me the idea that I wanted to do an abstract moon design. The next image is of a full moon and just gave me more inspiration of what it was that I was producing.
- The next four images are of 4 different minimalistic album covers (Prince - The Black Album, Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See, Arctic Monkeys - AM, Jamie XX - We're New Here) all of these albums have a quality that I wanted to get across in my design. It was important for me to find designs like this so I knew that they worked in conjunction with the ideas I already had in my head. I wanted to know that these designs were common in this field, and it seems like they were so that helped in producing my design.
- The grey panel at the side of the page is to show the main colour scheme that I wanted to use, the use of this fairly dull colour is to make the whole digipak look more sophisticated and slick. It was important to me to get a interesting feel and look to my digipak and I didn't want to make it too flashy considering I was planning on using textures within the design also. I wanted to make sure that the textured effect did the talking.
- The next three pictures on the second row show my main inspiration which is Arcade Fire, because we are doing this band's song it meant that taking inspiration from their digipaks and general looks as well was very crucial to the development of my work. Here I have a picture of the front cover of their most recent album, Reflektor, as well as a poster from that tour. I have also found a screen shot from the video of the first single off of that album, and I like the use of the mirrored sphere in the background of the shot. This is something that I thought could be relevant to the band and therefore connect to my own design.
- The next picture shows a close up of a rock, even though this is a fairly odd thing to use as inspiration, I have found that looking at pictures such as this has given me lots of ideas in how I want to present the 'moon' theme. The colours as well is something that inspired me and made me realise that I wanted to keep going with the colour scheme that I originally had in mind.
- Next, is my first digipak design. I was quite proud of this design as I felt as though it represented the genre of music I was producing as well as the band I was also representing. Having a design that fits with the rest of the work and works well on its own or with seeing the video is crucial. This is because it has to look realistic and believable as a digipak and as a first effort, I believe this was achieved.
- The next image also shows a textured effect that I was curious to try. As I have previously stated, I am interested in finding images such as this because I allows me to see exactly what I want to do and how that can be achieved. The textured effect was very important to me so finding this and many other effects allowed me to be more creative.
- The next image shows Digitalism's album I Love You Dude, This also was an inspirational digipak cover because of the central element of the digitalised love heart which I used as inspiration for my own central image. That is essentially what I used, also the plain background was something I wanted to emulate.
- The next images include the fonts and colours that I was intrigued to use on the spine and the back cover of the digipak, I had to create a lot of options of what I wanted to produce because it gives me more of an idea then to how I wanted to go about the final design. As I had criticism from my teacher's in regards to the font I used and the darkness of the colours, it meant that this was of prime importance to me.
- The next two albums shown also have elements that are showing dramatic geometric designs that are eye catching to the viewer. They were designs that I was very inspired by and also made me realise that these types of designs are traditionally seen throughout the industry and it wouldn't be uncommon if I did something similar.
- The next design is from a Pet Shop Boys album, this was something that very much helped within the process of my design making. The use of the central image was something that I was trying to find to make sure that it was relevant to what I wanted to produce, Even though The Pet Shop Boys are not within the same genre of my chosen band, their design was still beneficial for me to see.
- The next two images are painting (Black Circle (1913) oil on canvas. State Russian Museum, St Petersburg. By Kasimir Malevich. and Primary Light Group: Red, Green, Blue 1964-65. Jo Baer) they inspired also because of their use of central simple images which is obviously something that I definitely was intending to stick to.
- This is my final design, the only real difference is the colour has been lightened slightly.
- The next three final images are minimalistic film posters which I took inspiration from throughout because of their simple design and ability to look more busy than they are which is a style and vibe that I wanted to emulate throughout my design.

Digipak Inspiration
All of these images have inspired me with my digipak and advert, having these images to base my designs on is useful because I then get to see what other people have produced and I can make something more professional because of this.

Final Digipak and Advert - Lauren Bolton
As you can see here, this is my final digipak and advert design. Everything still looks rather similar to my draft design, however that is because it worked so well. The only major change to the actual digipak itself is the removal of the band members from the bottom of the inside cover. Also I have changed the font from looking too 'deco' to something a bit more quirky and relatable to the genre of music that I am channeling. Other than that, there is nothing really that has changed too dramatically and I am pleased with the overall finish. I have taken my main inspiration for the whole look from a number of places, mainly the simplicity of The XX's albums have been something that I have really enjoyed seeing and getting inspired from their originality and effortless design.
However, I would say that I have tried to be as original as possible because I have never seen this type of design before and therefore it is something that I am pleased to have created, as I feel as though it represents the chosen genre and style of music really well. The circle design that I have created for both my digipak and advert represents the album name which is 'eclipse' and the smaller circle rising up to the larger one shows the power that the 'underdog' can have. Which for the band we have created, and this being their fourth album, it is referencing to their rise to fame and success. Thinking of a design like this wasn't too difficult because I already knew the type of image that I wanted to create and because I knew that I wanted it to be very clean cut and eye catching, that led me to this idea.
The circle image is a motif that can be seen throughout both the digipak and advert, it is good to be connecting these two designs together because if the advert even looked slightly different then it wouldn't be good promotion for the album because the consumers would get confused as to what the advert was trying to tell them.
The advert itself is a very different and original design, I decided to not put any information onto this piece because I have seen many album adverts in the past that have done this with good effect. The sole reason why I decided to do it then was for the fact that this is Parables fourth album; they would already have legions of fans as well as new coming fans that would recognise what this meant. This design is just meant to stir up excitement for what is to come and it also inspires the readers of the magazine that this advert would be in to research what this all meant. It's sublimely advertising to make the consumers find out the information themselves and for them to realise that by going and looking for the information that they are intrigued enough that they want to hear the final album because of that initial curiosity.
Throughout the digipak and advert as well, I have used the motif of the textured grey background; it is in use on the actual digipak, the digipak insert and also the advert. I really liked the whole look of this texture rather than it being a solid block colour, it allows for the design to have some well needed depth because as this band is heavily inspired by Arcade Fire it means that they need the same amount of depth as they have.
The whole design is very simple, and looks very effortless. This band Parables are one of those bands that do things in an effortless fashion, knowing that for what they do would take other bands years of experience to match them. Thinking about all of this information and drawing up a good and clarified back story has allowed me to create the digipak and advert with ease because I was able to get myself into the mindset of what this band would want and do. The precision of the circles and the depth of field they give allow the consumer to be sucked into their world of music. Just like Arcade Fire do.
The font I have chosen as well for the digipak is something that looks very quirky, and it can be said that it doesn't entirely match the look of the circles and their simplicity. It is a very busy font, however that is what I wanted because I wanted that contrast of the simple and the busy.
I added an insert into my digipak design because I wanted there to be more information about the band and what they did to create the album, again creating that back story to make them more believable and real. I do think I could have added more information to the insert however to keep it more in tune with the design as a whole I stripped it back to being the most basic information so that the secrecy that the band has is kept.

Feedback from Draft Digipak and Advert - Lauren Bolton
I have recently been given feedback from the first draft of my digipak and advert, having this feedback is something that I find very useful because I now know things I should and shouldn't be doing and it has given me clarification as to what kind of thing I want to create.
For my poster the only feedback was to get rid of the QR code in the corner, I do want to leave it as minimalistic as possible because that is the tone I am looking for and I don't want to over complicate something that could look very effortless and stylish. I am yet to decide how else I can develop it however it has given me a good starting base on what to go on to make it as professional as possible.
With my digipak, however, there is a lot more to go on and more developments that I need to make to ensure that I am creating the most professional digipak I can. For example, the font I used on my digipak was not right for the look of my album so therefore I am going to have to develop that into something that is more impressive and makes more of a statement. Also another aspect that I knew needed to be changed anyway was the illegible writing at the bottom of the inside left tray. This is something that I made too small therefore even when enlarged and seeing a bigger image, the writing was still illegible. I need to do a lot of redesigning still because even though this is the kind of look I am going for, I still need to develop my ideas further and make sure I am producing something that wouldn't look out of place on a CD shelf; and even though I don't think this design would look out of place it still isn't quite right and the font as well as other features need to be developed further to be successful.
Obviously there is still a lot to do and I am going to be developing the final idea now.

Lauren Bolton - Draft Digipak and Poster
This is my design for my draft digipak. I have chosen to do a four panel design because I wanted the album to be very minimalistic and get across a kind of 'clean' finish that the other albums I have looked at get across. This is something that I may still develop further and to create a six panel digipak because I feel like for the type of music I am making a music video that it needs a six panel version. However with this just being the draft then I just wanted to get my ideas down before I develop it further. I created a motif throughout both my digipak and magazine advert and that was with the use of the 'eclipse' of the two textured circles. The reason for this 'eclipse' effect is because that is what I named the album so I thought that this was a fitting image to create without actually giving away the album name obviously. The actual CD part of the digipak would also be plain white, however another aspect of this 'eclipse' motif is with the outline of the circle with the paler circle in the middle of that. I am generally quite pleased with the outcome of this CD design and is probably something that I would keep in tact for the final version of my digipak. I have called my record label Earthling Records because I just thought that seemed quite fitting with the style of the digipak and I just thought that it worked rather well. The one major criticism I would have so far is that I think that bar code is too small on reflection, this obviously would be something that I would change for my final version however I don't want it to be too big because I don't want that to overpower the rest of the back cover.
The inside cover is possibly that I will still change because I'm not overly pleased with the outcome. I have used lyrics from our chosen music video song, Arcade Fire's 'My Body is a Cage', and I also added the feature of the band members at the bottom of that and what instruments they play.
Overall I am quite pleased with the start of this digipak, I still have a lot to develop however it is definitely the type of style that I want to be making and I am pleased with the simplicity and effortless of it.
This is my design for my magazine advert, again like my digipak, I have used the motif of the 'eclipse' symbol which I think looks very effective on a advert format. It creates an impact that would catch the eye of the person looking at it, and the reason that I haven't included the band name at all on this is because it is the band's fourth album so they would be well known enough that it would get their original fans excited and also the addition of the QR code in the corner would be for the newer (more curious) fans to find out more information. I didn't want to include much on this advert because it can be very easily over complicated and I like the look of just the motif in the middle with the record label and QR code in the corners. It's exactly the type of look I was going for and I am pleased with the draft version of this advert I have so far.
